Get away from thinking:

  • Of servers as physical infrastructure
  • Of servers correlating to game world locations
  • Of servers being involved in client rendering processes

Start thinking about:

  • Servers performing services or roles
  • Client engine choice and platforms supported
  • How clients and services will interact
  • Test and debug servers that reside on your desktop
