Devlog #4 - Maps & Environments

Published January 01, 2024

My game- Harvest Fall, has multiple biomes-

The Village Biome

The Beach Biome

The Forest Biome

The Dungeons

The Mines

The Underworld Biome and

The Frost Biome

My planned workflow for creating these biomes or maps as I refer to them when talking about my game’s technical stuff, is going into Blockbench modeling the different features and parts for these maps and environments, head over to SketchUp, import these features, assemble/arrange these features into a map and then export the map in SketchUp for use in my project.

Of course the title of the devlog is ‘Maps & Environments’ but I’ve only talked about maps. Environments are much smaller than maps and a great example of them in my game is the inside of the player’s or an NPC’s home.

The process I’m using to create maps is the same workflow applying to creating these environments, it’s just gonna be on a smaller scale- for example, modeling a lot less features…

Now let me talk about the different biomes.

The Village Biome:

This is where the player (you) will spawn. It has 22 residents, the villagers/NPCs, but 23 if you include yourself, the player.

The Forest Biome:

In the Village biome, you’ll be able to purchase different items such as seeds from shops called ‘Merchants’. These items will cost money- Harvest Fall has a fictional currency which I named Bits, however, this name is subject to change.

Not all items will cost money, some of them will cost loot, and you can get loot by heading into a dangerous biome such as The Forest, and fighting monsters and hostile animals. These animals or monsters will drop some loot once defeated allowing you to collect this loot, go to a Merchant and trade the loot for an item such as a potion or enchantment.

The Mines:

In this map or biome, you mine ores for minerals or other valuable items- while fighting off small hordes of monsters.

The Dungeons:

I’d like say this one is more of a map than a biome since I find it a little weird to call it a biome.

In the Dungeons, you simply fight endless hordes of monsters for one goal- LOOT!!!

The Underworld:

I’m thinkin this one could give off hell-esque vibes like Minecraft’s Nether…

The Frost Biome:

This would be a freezing cold biome with few animals, both harmless and hostile, and no monsters. The animals could be rabbits, owls, walruses, seals, penguins and polar bears. I’m thinking the polar bear could be the only hostile mob in this biome.

The Beach Biome:

I plan on making this the smallest biome in the game and it’s purpose is for relaxation, if you, the player wants, and fishing.

The only mobs here will be harmless animals such as crabs and oysters.

And that’s all the biomes! In the next devlog I’m going to be talking about UI design, sorry this devlog came out late and a very big THANKS- for reading…
