Devlog #6 - The Economy

Today I wanted to talk about Harvest Fall’s economy.

When you create a new save file, you, the player, will spawn in your home. At the back of your home will be a plot of land for containing home improvements and extensions. But by the side of your house, you have your farm.

The game will have its own currency, Bits (unofficial name). You will start out with 1200 Bits and you’ll have to go to a Merchant and buy seeds to plant in your farm.

Once you plant your seeds they will take their time to grow before you can harvest them to sell, eat or cook.

When you sell your crops you gain money, which you can use to buy even more seeds or buy other resources such as potions/enchantments and extensions for your home.

There are three Merchants in the game, the first being the closest to the player’s house, the second being the second-closest one and the third one being the furthest.

The first one opens early, closes late and offers seeds, fertilizer and more but at a higher price than others. The second one also offers seeds, fertilizer, a few home improvements and more like that at a fair price but opens later and closes early. The third one doesn’t offer seeds or fertilizer but instead offers home improvements, potions/enchantments, meals, and more like that, but– it doesn’t take money (Bits), instead, it takes loot and other valuable resources such as ores. It opens the latest and closes the earliest, though.

Besides Merchants, you can sell to and buy from other businesses such as restaurants, bakeries and lounges, yes– restaurants, bakeries and lounges.

I thinking of adding fast-food restaurants which sell different foods and have different operation hours. You can simply enter one these restaurants and order some food.

The player can head to lounges just to socialize with NPCs, order drinks such as beer or soda, and play/listen to music.

The player can pay a visit to bakeries to order bread, cakes and pastries.

You can farm fruits and other ingredients for restaurants to create their fast food, bakeries to create their baked goods and lounges to make drinks.

The third Merchant could offer export options where the player could sell their crops to buyers overseas to make a quick buck although it will be a bit pricey.

And that’s it for this devlog. More things I want to add to the game are wizards, witches, bathhouses, wells, the ability to adopt animals, diseases, hospitals, etc. Thanks for reading and see you in the next one!
